Hobbes Blog...Due Monday

Opening:
What would you do if you were in a situation where your life was on the line? Would you save the person standing next to you who is also in danger or would you save yourself? My name is Thomas Hobbes and I believe that at the end of the day every man is for themselves. In a instant decision where it is either your life or another, everyone would save themselves instead. Humans are greedy and selfish when it comes to their well being, for example when there is scarcity of for instance food, any human will become competitive and greedy with the others that are hungry and will not rest until he or she is guaranteed his food and survival. When humans are born they are born with one right and one right only, to protect one's self no matter what even if violence and slaughter must be involved.  When a human only has that one right they will fiercely protect it which results in all humans leading selfish lives. My famously known"social contract" states that a third party must be involved and granted all power. Humans are solely driven by fear of death and lust for power if humans are fearful for their lives and don't have power there will be a breakdown of civilization. To prevent this all power must be given to one person only, that person will prevent violence and give security and community to his/her people. This could result in a dictatorship but this is the only way to keep a society together!

Evidence:
Black Friday. One day of the year where millions of Americans get up in the wee hours of the night to save a couple bucks on items such as TV's and laptops. This sounds harmless right? Think again, on black friday in 2008 a 34 year-old Wal-Mart employee was trampled and killed by the crowds of shoppers hoping to save money. What is more important fifty dollars or a young man's life who has a family, parents, and friends? Reading this now many would say the man's life but that doesn't hide the the fact that a man was killed because of a sale at Wal-Mart. In the heat of the moment humans get lost, they loose grip of reality and this story proves that. It is terrible but sometimes the truth is, and we must face it. Humans are surrounded by horrid stories of murders, shootings, bombings, etc. everyday, its part of the way many have grown up, in the book Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult human nature shines through the engrossing pages of the novel. Peter the main character has been bullied all his life, though his life is hard he acts on violence because he has never gotten what he wanted most, social exception. Peter, at seventeen years-old kills 10 people in 19 minutes out of revenge. This is an example of human nature because some humans go as far as this when their lives aren't what they want. A lighter example of human nature is a movie called Mean Girls. In this movie a group of high school girls will do whatever it takes to stay on top. The power of popularity clouds their reality of respect. The four girls lie, cheat, and bully others to stay in power which shows just how evil humans can really be.
